Rebecca Feldhaus named student of the month

Howard senior earns award from Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio

Howard High School senior Rebecca Feldhaus has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio. She’s recognized for her many notable achievements in and out of the classroom.

Feldhaus is a candidate for senior class valedictorian with a GPA of 3.98. School officials say she’s a driven, determined student.

“Her course electives are very impressive with an additional six dual credit courses this fall,” said HHS Principal T.A. Aslesen. “Her FFA accomplishments are significant and show a strong commitment to her school and heritage. She has a bright future indeed.”

Feldhaus is vice president of the National Honor Society, is senior class president and is active in FCCLA. She’s also team captain and a letter winner in volleyball.

Feldhaus is passionate about agriculture and is a member of the Henden Future Farmers 4H Club. She’s also vice-president of her local FFA chapter and earned first place state awards for FFA Agricultural Broadcasting in 2022 and FFA Floriculture in 2023.

Among her other achievements, Feldhaus earned the Presidential Academic Excellence Award in 2021. She was a Girls State delegate in 2023 and earned the highest Citizenship Exam Score. She’s also served as a legislative page for the South Dakota Legislature.

Feldhaus is the daughter of Jeromy and Maria Feldhaus. After high school she plans to study political science and legal studies at the University of South Dakota, with plans of attending the Knudson School of Law.

The “Student of the Month” is awarded through a partnership of Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio in Madison and recognizes exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland Energy provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga, all of which are in the KJAM listening area.

Each month of the school year, Heartland Energy presents an outstanding student from one of these schools with a recognition certificate and small token, and advertisements announcing the winning student air on KJAM Radio. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
