Heartland Energy named Outstanding Supporter by Interlakes Area United Way

March 6, 2024

In February, Heartland Energy was recognized by non-profit organization Interlakes Area United Way (IAUW) as Outstanding Supporter: Business Partner. The commendation was made during IAUW’s 2023 Annual Meeting.

“Heartland and Interlakes Area United Way have had an enduring partnership that’s taken many forms and spanned decades,” said IAUW President Lori Gustaf. “We greatly appreciate their ongoing support in helping us strengthen lives in this region.”

IAUW is a non-profit organization that coordinates financial and volunteer resources for non-profit agencies in Lake, Miner and Moody Counties in South Dakota. IAUW’s goal is to create long-lasting changes by focusing on the building blocks for a good life: education, health and economic mobility.

Heartland’s relationship with the organization is deep-rooted, originating in the 90’s under the helm of then-general manager Dave Westbrock. A strong advocate of United Way and its work, he created an environment at Heartland that encouraged employee giving.

“There have been countless years with 100% giving among Heartland employees,” Gustaf said. “Dave and his wife Phyllis were great supporters of our organization and they created a culture of goodwill for which we are very grateful.”

The Westbrocks also spent years serving on IAUW’s volunteer board of directors, as have many other Heartland employees since, including serving on the executive committee or as campaign chair.

Three Heartland employees currently serve on IAUW’s board, including Communications Specialist Danielle Kearin, IAUW Vice President and board member since 2012, Executive Assistant Katie Hahn, former IAUW Administrative Liaison, IAUW Treasurer and board member since 2022, and Accountant II Megan Rummel, board member since 2016.

Heartland was also recognized as a longtime corporate sponsor of IAUW’s WIN BIG Raffle, the organization’s annual fundraising event that generates roughly half of its general fund.

“We are proud to partner with a worthwhile organization such as Interlakes Area United Way,” said Heartland Chief Communications Officer Ann Hyland. “We both aim to contribute to the greater good in the communities we serve. United Way bolsters vital programs in our customer communities of Howard, Madison and Colman and their surrounding areas. Supporting United Way is another way for us to support our customers and enhance the value of our service.”

During campaign seasons in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Interlakes Area United Way shared campaign updates in the Madison Daily Leader. At left, IAUW recognized Heartland and its employees for 100% employee giving for a total pledge of $2,900 towards their campaign goal of $150,000.
