Fedeler to retire after 44 years

May 1, 2024

When Sharla Fedeler joined Heartland Consumers Power District as a bookkeeper in 1980, the facility at 203 W Center street was under renovation. As such, all employees worked together in one room and her temporary desk was a card table and folding chair.

Her tenure began before the acquisition of computers, so she created monthly financial statements using a calculator, pencil and typewriter. She posted on ledger cards using an aging, loud posting machine.

Eventually a computer did arrive, but it was shared by all employees.

Forty-four years later, Sharla is set to retire as Heartland’s accountant and longest-serving employee. Much has changed in that time, including the technology, Heartland’s headquarters, her job duties and the electric industry itself.

In her personal life, Sharla gained a husband, two children and six grandchildren.

As she nears retirement, set for May 31, 2024, she reflects on her career and its memorable moments.

Sharla attended her final customer event at the Annual Meeting in April. Heartland staff surprised her with a special tribute video.
