Community and city leader recognized for progress and service

From downtown improvements to new housing and infrastructure projects, Akron, IA has been steadily investing in its future.

Those efforts recently earned recognition from a regional development group, Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO).

At its recent annual meeting and awards ceremony, SIMPCO named Akron its 2026 Community of the Year. City Administrator Dan Rolfes also received the Community Leaders Award for his dedication to public service.

SIMPCO is a regional council of governments that helps communities across northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota.

The organization provides planning, economic development, grant writing, transportation, housing assistance and other services that strengthen communities.

The Community of the Year award recognizes measurable progress through planning, investment and regional collaboration.

Akron stood out for its efforts to revitalize downtown, expand housing, support business growth, and improve parks, trails and infrastructure. Ongoing flood mitigation projects also helped position the community for future success.

Rolfes said the recognition reflects the dedication of the entire community.

“I think it shows that we are putting our best foot forward and have a lot of great things going on thanks to the hard work from everyone in our community,” he said. “I would like to thank all the citizens, employees, and anybody who serves on a board or group.”

Rolfes was also recognized for nearly two decades of service to the city.

During his career, he has led major infrastructure improvements, updated Akron’s Comprehensive Plan and Hazard Mitigation Plan, secured grant funding for wastewater improvements, and continues pursuing projects that support future business growth.

“Dan’s work has strengthened infrastructure systems, supported economic growth, and improved the quality of life for residents,” SIMPCO Executive Assistant Emily Guthrie said. “His career reflects a deep commitment to public service and a strong partnership with SIMPCO.”

In accepting the award, Rolfes thanked his family and credited local leaders who work together to move the community forward.

The dual recognition reflects years of thoughtful planning and local leadership. By investing in infrastructure, supporting economic growth and working with regional partners, Akron is creating new opportunities for residents, businesses and future generations.
