Over the course of his high school career, Trevor Petrik has earned an abundance of personal achievements and accolades. A senior at Howard High School, Petrik is an outstanding two-sport student athlete, musician, singer and actor who excels in the classroom and is committed to community involvement.
For these achievements and more, Petrik has been named Student of the Month by Heartland and KJAM Radio.
Howard’s school administration nominated Petrik for the award, saying, “Trevor is an excellent student and role model for his peers. He exemplifies wonderful characteristics as a student and as a citizen of the community.”
Petrik’s academic career is impressive. Fourth in his class, he’s been on the “A” Honor Roll since 7th grade and is currently enrolled in some college-level courses. He is the recipient of the Presidential Academic Award, is a member of National Honor Society and tutors grade school and high school students.
Outside the classroom, Petrik is a four-year letter winner in football and wrestling and has served as team captain for both sports. He’s been named Most Improved Wrestler twice and also Most Improved Football Player. He’s also been the recipient of the Tiger Award for Wrestling and was a state qualifier in 2018.
Talented on the trombone and tuba, Petrik is a four-year letter winner in band and four-year Big East band member. He’s also a skilled vocalist and participates in choir and show choir. He is a three-year letter winner in choir and a three-year member of both Big East Honor and All-State choirs.
Petrik’s other extra-curricular activities include Oral Interp, All-School Play and FFA, including time served as chapter treasurer and president.
Committed to service, he helps serve community meals at local churches, prepares gift baskets for underprivileged children and nursing home residents, and volunteers at local sporting event concession stands and within the local youth wrestling program.
Petrik is the son of Ben and Nicole Petrik. After graduation, he plans to attend South Dakota State University to major in nursing and minor in health education. His ultimate goal is to work as a Registered Nurse at a hospital in South Dakota, where he hopes to help children and adults learn the importance of personal health.
The “Student of the Month” is awarded through a partnership of Heartland and KJAM Radio in Madison and recognizes exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga, all of which are in the KJAM listening area.
Each month of the school year, Heartland presents an outstanding student from one of these schools with a recognition certificate and small token, and advertisements announcing the winning student air on KJAM Radio. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
This is the eighth year Heartland and KJAM have teamed up to offer this program.
