Giving back, one meal at a time

Public power is about more than providing reliable electricity. It’s about creating a positive impact in the communities we serve and helping to make them stronger.

As part of this year’s Public Power Day of Giving, Heartland Energy staff spent time volunteering at Feeding South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

The team worked alongside other volunteers to sort and pack food that will make its way to individuals and families across the state.

Together, the group packed 1,200 bags in just under two hours.

Feeding South Dakota is the state’s largest hunger-relief organization, working with community partners and volunteers to provide food in all 66 counties.

Its programs serve children, families and seniors through food distributions, school programs, senior boxes, food pantries and other resources. During its 2025 fiscal year, the organization provided 11.6 million meals across the state.

Public Power Day of Giving is an opportunity for public power utilities to put their commitment to community into action. Created by American Public Power Association, the annual volunteer event is typically held in conjunction with APPA’s National Conference.

For Heartland, the morning at Feeding South Dakota was a simple but meaningful reminder that giving back doesn’t always require a big project. Sometimes, it’s just showing up, pitching in and helping provide a meal to a neighbor.
