CEO’s Report: The power of connection

August 4, 2026

Relationships are often the key to success.

The relationships we build with our customers, business partners, and industry peers are the foundation that allows us to serve our communities with excellence.

Some of the most meaningful conversations happen between scheduled meetings, over a shared meal, or while reconnecting with colleagues we may only see a few times each year. Those conversations build trust, spark new ideas, strengthen partnerships, and remind us that we are all working toward a common purpose.

Our recent Summer Conference was a perfect example of the importance of making connections.

Celebrating our 20th year, the event brought together board members, employees, customers, legislators and industry partners in an environment designed not only for learning, but for collaboration.

At Heartland, we often say we are more than a power provider. We are a community partner, which means providing education not only on energy-related topics, but on helping communities succeed, facing challenges and creating innovative solutions.

Our speakers provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing communities, while also providing lessons in leadership.

Eric Hortness, left, executive director of the Greater Madison Area Chamber of Commerce, and Ryan Budmayr, president and CEO of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry, spoke about promoting your community and the roles of their respective organizations.
As keynote speaker, former Sioux Falls Mayor and entrepreneur Paul TenHaken shared his thoughts on being an effective public servant and leader.

We hope you took something valuable away from the conference – an idea you can share with others, a contact you can call on, or maybe you’re ready to hit the ground running on your community’s next big event.

Whatever the takeaway, no organization succeeds in isolation. The challenges we face are best addressed when we learn from one another and work together.

Every connection made at the Summer Conference represents an opportunity to share knowledge, solve problems, and build a stronger network.

These connections also reinforce something that has always set the public power model apart: We are not simply organizations conducting business with one another; we are partners committed to serving our members and communities.

When we invest in relationships, we strengthen our ability to fulfill that mission

Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Summer Conference and contributed to its success.

Your willingness to engage, share ideas, and build meaningful connections reflects the collaborative spirit that defines Heartland Energy.
