Kaelyn Ulschmid of Arlington earns award from Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio

When Arlington, SD senior Kaelyn Ulschmid laces up her running shoes, she does more than race.

She leads.

For six straight years, Ulschmid has qualified for the state cross country meet–an achievement that reflects her talent and determination.

That same drive carries into every part of her life. She’s a leader in the classroom, on stage, and in her many school activities.

In everything she does, she gives her best effort.

“Kaelyn manages to be involved in virtually everything and shine in the classroom,” said Arlington High School Principal Lisa Parry. “AHS will miss her next year, and we cannot wait to see what her future holds.”

Ulschmid has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio. She’s recognized for her leadership, academic excellence and positive influence at school.

Ulschmid is a standout distance runner, earning a medal in each of her six state cross country meet appearances. She’s also a four-time DVC Cross Country champion and earned All-State honors four years in a row.

Her finishes helped the Arlington girls team earn back-to-back State Runner-Up finishes in 2022 and 2023.

In track and field, Ulschmid has medaled in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at state meets. She helped the girls team earn runner-up honors at the 2024 State B Track Meet.

Ulschmid’s involvement extends far beyond running. She competes in basketball, volleyball and golf while taking on leadership roles in school clubs and excelling in the classroom.

She serves as student council president, FFA president, and treasurer for the National Honor Society. As a member of Robotics, she helped her team advance to regional competition in 2023.

Ulschmid is active in theatre, oral interp, and A-Club, and is a Unified Partner for Special Olympics. She also participates in South Dakota’s Educators Rising program.

Ulschmid also finds joy in serving others. She’s active in Calvary Free Lutheran youth group and helps lead worship at church services.

Ulschmid is the daughter of David and Jodi Ulschmid. After graduation, she plans to study special education and compete in cross country and track at a Christian four-year college.

The “Student of the Month” is awarded through a partnership of Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio in Madison and recognizes exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga, all of which are in the KJAM listening area.

Each month of the school year, Heartland presents an outstanding student from one of these schools with a recognition certificate and small token, and advertisements announcing the winning student air on KJAM Radio. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
