Jameson Degen earns award from Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio

Sioux Valley High School senior Jameson Degen is a leader and hard worker. Whether in the classroom, on the field or in the community, he always puts his best effort forward.

“Jameson embodies drive, dedication and school spirit,” said SVHS Principal Tyler Bolstad. “He’s highly engaged, finding ways to showcase his talent and leadership skills. His approach to classes and extracurriculars reflects his commitment to personal growth. He challenges himself to achieve excellence and positively influence those around him.” 

Degen has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio. He’s recognized for his achievements in academics and sports along with his dedication to community service.

Degen has

maintained a 4.0 GPA and made the Honor Roll every semester of high school. He’s also earned Academic Student of the Month status each year. His junior and senior years, he earned recognition in competitions like National History Day and Voice of Democracy.

Degen is a four-year member of student council and serves as senior class president. He’s vice president of National Honor Society and is a member of FCCLA and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Through his various roles he’s contributed to many school initiatives. He led projects for food and toy drives and benefits like the “Supporting Sisters” event. 

Degen spearheads community service projects as well. He volunteers for United Way, assisting with the 211 Helpline and Red Cross blood drives. 

As a senior he led a project with the Humanitarian Launch Service Leadership Academy. He also built beds with his church group for children in need through “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.”

As a student-athlete, Degen shines as a captain of the football, golf, and soccer teams. 

He holds several school football records, including the most career kicking points. This year, he earned the Adam Vinatieri Kicker of the Year award and made the All-State Selection Team, All-Register Football Team, and others.

A prolific golfer, Degen has qualified for region and state competitions each year since tenth grade. As a member of SoDak Spurs Club, he was named a Senior All-Star by South Dakota Youth Soccer Association.

Degen also received the South Dakota Academic All-State Award in both golf and football. 

Degen is the son of Becky and Spencer Degen. After high school, he plans to attend a four-year university to study math or science.

Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio’s Student of the Month program celebrates exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland Energy provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga. 

Each month, a deserving student from one of these communities is honored for their outstanding achievements. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
