Caden Schwader earns award from Heartland and KJAM Radio

Caden Schwader has earned a reputation as a top student in Howard, SD.

School officials say the senior approaches everything with a positive attitude and steady focus. He holds a 4.03 GPA, has taken numerous advanced courses, and is a trusted leader in both academics and athletics.

“Caden is an outstanding student,” said Howard High School Principal T.A. Aslesen. “He has exhausted our curriculum in a variety of subject areas and has invested himself heavily in college-level coursework. He is also a confident, influential leader and source of daily encouragement and belonging.”

Schwader has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio. He’s recognized for his academic accomplishments, leadership and commitment to his school community.

“Caden is a leader amongst his peers. We are very excited to see what his future holds,” Aslesen said.

In the classroom, Schwader consistently performs at the highest level.

He is an Academic All-State honoree, competes in Quiz Bowl, and is treasurer for National Honor Society. He has served as student council president since tenth grade.

Schwader’s senior year includes several key academic honors. He served as an officer at Boys State and won the area VFW Voice of Democracy competition.

He was runner-up in the 2025 NSU Advanced Algebra Math Competition and placed third in Agriculture and Natural Resources at the 2025 State Speech Contest.

Schwader is also a three-sport student athlete, excelling in basketball, cross country and track.

He’s qualified for the state cross country meet five consecutive years, earning medals in 2022 and 2023. He’s also a two-time state track qualifier and was part of Howard’s 2024 State Championship basketball team.

Outside of school, Schwader enjoys lifting weights, running, and spending time with family.

He’s active in his church and the Lutheran Youth Organization and seeks out volunteer opportunities to give back to his community.

Schwader is the son of Kristi and Dale Schwader. After graduation, he plans to study business administration at the University of South Dakota with an interest in pre-law.

“Student of the Month” is awarded through a partnership of Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio in Madison. It recognizes exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga, all of which are in the KJAM listening area.

Each month of the school year, Heartland presents an outstanding student from one of these schools with a recognition certificate and small token, and advertisements announcing the winning student air on KJAM Radio. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
