Throughout it all, she’s earned a reputation for leading by example.
“Miranda is a great leader,” said MHS Principal Andrew Johnson. “She is involved in many activities and shows leadership by being inclusive and respectful to everyone. She will be missed next year.”
Gonyo has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio. She’s recognized for her initiative, achievements and positive influence.
Gonyo served as class president her freshman, sophomore and junior years. This year, she was elected student body president and also represents her peers as a senior ambassador.
She balances those roles with a full slate of activities.

She participates in the Teens as Teachers program through the South Dakota Youth Foundation and is presently undertaking a teacher apprenticeship.
Beyond leadership, Gonyo is known for her outstanding character.
She was selected as a HOBY seminar recipient in 2024 and received the Spirit of Max Award for Class A tennis in 2025. She was also named Madison’s Homecoming Queen last fall.
Gonyo is a member of Living Hope Youth Group, volunteers with their elementary group and teaches Sunday School.
She works as a lifeguard at the Madison Aquatic Center and Community Center and assists with swimming lessons.
Gonyo is the daughter of Dana and Gary Gonyo. After high school, she plans to attend South Dakota State University and major in elementary education.
Student of the Month is awarded through a partnership of Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio in Madison. It recognizes outstanding students from five area school districts: Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga. Heartland provides wholesale electric power to each of these communities.
School officials from each district nominate students for the award.
