New C-Store benefits from infrastructure improvements

A new convenience store in Bryant, SD is bringing fresh energy to the community.

Farmers Union Co-op Oil recently opened its new C-Store along Highway 28. The large, modern facility offers fuel, food, and everyday essentials.

The project had been in the works for years, as increasing traffic and community needs called for a larger, more accessible location.

Grant helps with upgrades

To accommodate the new store, the city provided essential infrastructure services to the area. They replaced and extended water and sewer infrastructure and installed a lift station and force main piping.

A $5,000 economic development grant from the city’s wholesale power supplier helped support the improvements necessary to make it happen.

Heartland Energy’s grant program supports projects that drive economic progress in its customer communities.

“Business development in rural communities isn’t just about growth,” said Director of Economic Development Casey Crabtree. “It’s about creating opportunity and ensuring a sustainable future for residents.”

Expanded offerings draws customers

General Manager Ryan Burke said the store has seen steady business since opening thanks to its convenient location and enhanced product selection.

Outdoors, the updated site features semi-friendly diesel bays and multiple fuel options. The interior is spacious with a dedicated seating area.

An expanded menu includes fresh pizza and Chester’s Chicken. A new grab-and-go section is stocked with sushi and fresh deli items.

“It’s just so much busier than where we were before,” Burke told the Hamlin County Republican. “They say winter is the slowest time by far, but holy smokes if this is our slow time, I can’t image what spring and summer will be like.”

Groundwork for future growth

Beyond convenience, the project brings economic benefits to Bryant. The new store generates local sales tax revenue and creates employment opportunities.

By upgrading its utility infrastructure, the city is laying a strong foundation for future growth and development, ensuring reliable services, attracting new businesses, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Heartland Energy’s economic development grant played a small but important role in making it happen, reinforcing the company’s commitment to supporting rural communities.

With updated utilities in place and a thriving new business, Bryant is well-positioned for continued growth.
