Just 3 miles from Brookings, the city of Aurora is gaining attention as a growing hub for individuals and families seeking a small-town atmosphere with quick access to regional amenities.
With a rising population and strong sense of community, Aurora is becoming an ideal spot for first-time homebuyers, renters, and entrepreneurs alike.

On the south side of town, west of Broadway Street, development in the
Spilde Addition is well underway. The neighborhood features 39 residential lots, with several spec homes already available and more on the way.
Developer Josh Spilde plans to complete additional homes in groups to meet growing demand while keeping construction steady.
In addition to the single-family homes, Spilde is also adding four five-plex housing units, bringing a strong mix of rental opportunities to the area.
The demand for affordable housing is high, and this project is designed to meet the needs of a growing population.

Aurora is not only focused on housing but also making a name for itself as a business-friendly community. Three commercial lots in the Spilde Addition offer space for entrepreneurs to purchase or lease.
Owners can collaborate with Spilde to design custom buildings tailored to their operations. Nearby, the Industrial Park on the east side of Main Street provides additional opportunities for growth.
This area is ready for build-to-suit development, offering flexibility for businesses of all sizes.
“The preliminary plat is now approved … this developmentwould bring a lot of opportunities and amenities to the community,” said Spilde.
City leaders are also supporting new residential options with the DakotaPlex project, which includes 18 single-family units for rent. These homes will be delivered to Aurora nearly complete, needing only garages before move-in.
This rapid setup makes them ideal for individuals or families who want the feel of a single-family home without committing to a purchase.

Mayor Josh Jones and City Finance Officer Shannon Freng are optimistic about what lies ahead. The city is positioning itself to welcome an incoming workforce fueled by major projects such as the Marketplace Development and Bel Brands expansion.
With more jobs coming to the area, Aurora is actively preparing to provide quality housing and community support for new residents.
A key focus for city leadership is expanding the local commercial landscape. As Jones puts it, “Aurora is working to become a community and not just a bed stop.”
Attracting more businesses will help strengthen the tax base and support infrastructure and services that keep pace with growth.
With nearly a 10% increase in housing on the horizon, Aurora is not only growing but thriving. The community offers an attractive mix of homeownership, rental, and business development opportunities.
Whether you are ready to put down roots or bring a new business to life, Aurora is ready to welcome you. As Jones shared, “Aurora is going to boom and take off in the next year or two.”
Now is the time to take a closer look at what Aurora has to offer.
