Plankinton and Tyndall awarded Power Forward grants

August 19, 2026

Through our Power Forward grant program, Heartland Energy helps municipal customers invest in energy efficiency and improvements that benefit their communities.

Grants support projects at city facilities that optimize electric energy use, such as lighting or HVAC upgrades.

Recently, Heartland awarded grants to the cities of Plankinton and Tyndall for projects that demonstrate how these investments can improve public facilities while creating lasting benefits for the community.

Plankinton, SD

The city of Plankinton recently replaced all of the lighting at their fire station, upgrading from T12 to more efficient LED lighting.

Previous fixtures contained six, 40-watt fluorescent bulbs. Modern UFO lights took their place, ideal for lighting up large spaces while using substantially less power.

The old lights also required continuous maintenance as many of the fixtures were not working properly.

Heartland awarded the city $3,000 to help offset the project costs, which included the new lights as well as wiring and labor.

The new lights will benefit the fire department when performing truck maintenance or conducting training exercises in the fire station.

Tyndall, SD

Heartland awarded the city of Tyndall a Power Forward grant in the amount of $5,000 to assist with installing LED lighting at a softball field at Tyndall City Park.

The field is considered a secondary field and did not previously have lighting. The improvement will expand playable hours, reduce scheduling conflicts and increase access for youth programs, school athletics, and community recreation.

Tyndall City Park consists of over 17 acres and includes ballfields, a recreation trail, playground, courts, camping and a public pool.

The field was previously only usable during daylight hours. The addition of athletic field lighting was done in conjunction with other recent park investments and expands economic opportunities for Tyndall and the surrounding areas.

The project represents a strategic investment in the community, improving access, promoting health and wellness, increasing energy efficiency and supporting long-term economic development.
