New businesses bring fresh energy to Estelline
July 28, 2026Estelline, SD continues to flourish with the recent addition of two new locally-owned businesses.
Lakeside Coffee Co. opened its first brick-and-mortar coffee shop at the end of Main Street, while the Hitching Post Motel welcomed its first overnight guests with seven newly constructed rooms.
Together, the two businesses add new amenities for the community and travelers alike while reflecting continued investment in Estelline’s future.
Local coffee shop
After building a loyal following with a coffee trailer at Lake Poinsett, sisters Joelle Foley and Carissa Kellar have expanded with a permanent storefront at the end of Main Street in Estelline.
The sisters launched Lakeside Coffee Co. in the summer of 2025 after purchasing and renovating a coffee trailer.
The seasonal business quickly gained a dedicated customer base, leading to an unexpected opportunity to establish a year-round location.
According to Foley and Kellar, the move happened quickly after a local couple approached them about opening a coffee shop in Estelline.
“Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better community,” the sisters told The Estelline Journal. “The support has been incredible. We’ve gotten to know people by their names, their drink orders, and in some cases their exact arrival times. The people of Estelline have welcomed us with open arms, supported our crazy ideas, and helped turn a little coffee trailer into a real business. We’re incredibly grateful for that.”
The shop serves a full menu of specialty coffee drinks and baked goods, with new seasonal offerings introduced regularly. They are open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“Lakeside Coffee Co. started with a trailer, a lot of caffeine, questionable amounts of confidence, and two sisters who figured it out as they went,” the women said. “Against all odds, people kept showing up. We’re glad you did.”
New locally-owned motel
Another new addition to Estelline is the Hitching Post Motel, a newly constructed seven-room motel.
Owned by Jason and Amanda Saathoff, the motel recently opened all seven rooms to travelers, visiting families, contractors and others passing through the area.
Each room includes two queen beds, microwave, mini refrigerator, television and complimentary Wi-Fi. The motel also welcomes dogs for a one-time $10 pet fee.
The Saathoffs describe the motel as offering “clean, comfortable accommodations with friendly, small-town hospitality,” aiming to create a welcoming experience for every guest.
In addition to nightly stays, the Hitching Post Motel offers discounted extended-stay rates for contractors, construction crews and traveling workers needing accommodations in the area.
Reservations are currently available through the motel’s Facebook page while its online booking system continues to expand. Guests are encouraged to book directly through the motel’s Facebook booking link, where the owners say visitors can often find lower rates than through third-party travel websites.
The new motel adds another lodging option for visitors to Estelline while helping accommodate the area’s growing number of travelers, workers and families visiting the community.
