Student of the Month shines in academics and the arts
May 14, 2025Sioux Valley High School senior Alexis Rust honored by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio
Alexis Rust is known at Sioux Valley High School for her dedication, talent and leadership.
“Alexis is a well-rounded senior who excels both academically and in her co-curricular activities,” said SVHS Principal Tyler Bolstad. “She is a dedicated student, maintaining high academic standards while participating in many school activities. She serves as a role model for her peers through her positive attitude and commitment to success.”
A senior with a passion for learning and performing, Rust has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio. She’s recognized for her talents in both the classroom and the arts.
Rust serves as vice president of the student council and is a member of National Honor Society.
She’s also deeply involved in the fine arts–participating in choir, band, jazz choir, theater and oral interp. As a talented vocalist, she’s earned selection to South Dakota Honor Choir and Wayne State College Honor Choir. She was a member of All-State Choir her sophomore, junior and senior years.
Rust’s achievements also reflect her strengths in academics and leadership. She was named a Daktronics Academic All-State honoree in 2025 and was elected Attorney General by her peers at Girls State in 2024.
Also in 2024 she placed second in the South Dakota National History Day contest. Her entry earned a special award for best legal project.
Outside of school, Rust gives back to the community through volunteer work. She has helped with Feeding Brookings and contributed to Sioux Valley’s PTO’s Kids Night events over the past two years. She earned the DAR Good Citizen Award in for her efforts.
Rust is the daughter of Mike and Andrea Rust. After high school she plans to study mathematics and actuarial science at Augustana University.
Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio’s Student of the Month program celebrates exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland Energy provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga.
Each month, a deserving student from one of those communities is honored for their outstanding achievements. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
