Interruptible Load Program

Paving the way for growth

Data centers come in all shapes and sizes. Each one is built for a different purpose, but what they all have in common is the need for reliable electricity.

Heartland Energy’s Interruptible Load Program helps communities attract flexible data centers while ensuring reliable and cost-effective energy. The interruptible rate is optimal for large consumers of energy that can adjust power usage during peak demand times. This means communities can benefit from new economic opportunities without putting extra strain on the grid.

Cities with adequate infrastructure and excess capacity are ideal locations. The ability to utilize existing assets to bring the load online reduces upfront costs for the facility. Land availability and build-ready sites, particularly those located close to essential infrastructure, are also considered.

How does the Interruptible Load Program eliminate risk to the city?

  • Studies are performed to determine if a city’s system can handle the additional load
  • The facility is required to slow or cease power usage during grid emergencies or peak demands times to protect system reliability
  • A facility’s steady, around-the-clock power use can contribute to rate stability by generating additional revenue without increasing costs for current customers

What are the requirements to qualify for the Interruptible Load Program?

  • Locate within Heartland Energy’s current service territory
  • Have a peak load of at least 5 MW
  • Maintain an 80% load factor
  • Possess the capability to be interrupted – must perform quarterly tests to demonstrate interruptibility
